MPV which stands for multi-purpose vehicle, people-carrier, people-mover or multi-utility vehicle is a type of minivan that can roughly be classified in three or four segments: Large, compact, mini and sometimes micro. They are similar in shape to a van, but can contain between four and nine seats and are taller in height than a saloon car, hatchback or a station wagon, and are designed for maximum interior room.
This segment relates to all minivans which are sold in the United States, as they are above 4600mm (180 in) in length (these vehicles are also referred to as minivans). When the first European MPV was launched, it also belonged to this segment, as did other similar models, until smaller models began to appear. This particular style of vehicle is named a "large MPV" and come in styles such as the Dodge Caravan, Toyota Sienna, Ford Galaxy and Eurovan.
Compact MPVsThey have a length between 4200mm and 4600mm (165 – 180in). In 1996 the compact MPV was introduced in Europe and fast became an instant success, which encouraged vehicle manufacturers to produce other styles of compact MPVs in mass quantities. The key element in design was focused on these vehicles being an ideal small family car that offered plenty of passenger space, comfort and practicality. These models are designed to accommodate two or three rows of seating depending on the customers requirements (extra seating or storage space).
Mini MPVsThe Mini MPV is under4100mm (160in) in length, and was a revolutionary new concept that was released in the early 2000s. Their designs was based on supermini platforms and was intended to replace low cost leisure activity vehicles, but are considered too expensive as an alternative to buying small family car.
Specifications
MPVs are front-wheel drive and offer greater road handling (as opposed to rear wheel drive) in dangerous conditions such as rain, snow and ice. This configuration also allows more space inside the vehicle due to the absence of the driveshaft hump. The seating inside an MPV is also usually removable and allows the owner to use their vehicle in a number of ways, other than just transporting passegers.
Back in the 80s, minivans were slow, cumbersome and greatly underpowered when compared with the sports utility vehicle (SUVs), but did on the other hand have more fuel efficient four cylinder engines. However in the 90s the six-cylinder engine was developed and this helped solve the lack of power issue and helped improve performance and towing capabilities.
